Demographics
Foster City was founded in the 1960s on engineered landfill in the marshes of the San Francisco Bay. The City was name after T. Jack Foster who was instrumental in its initial design.

The City has a total of 19.9 square miles of which 81% is water (16.2 sq. miles) and 19%
(3.7 sq miles) is land. The population density is approximately 7,580 per square mile in the
 year 2000.

The 2000 Census tallied a total population of 28,803 and an average household size of 2.48.
From its website, the City Government estimates the current population at 29,500 and the total residential units at 13,200 or more. From the foregoing statistics, it can be inferred that the current population may be as high as 33,000.  (Note: The population estimate do not include the transient working population that come in and out of Foster City daily.)
 
Based on the 2000 Census, Foster City population by racial make-up is comprised of 59% White; 33% Asians;  4% from two or more races;  2% African Americans; and 2% other races. 

In terms of  age group, 22.7% are under the age of 19; 21.2% are between 20 to 34; 18.5% from 35 to 44; 22.8% from 45 to 59; 4.8% from 60 to 64; and 10.1% are over 65 years old.The median age is 38 years.

By gender, there are 96.8 males for every 100 females. And for every 100 females age 18 and
over, there are 93.9 males.
